Restored to Sanity
by Steven Fales
I watched as the inept one
Got custody and control.
I kept coming back
Watching over her shoulder
To make sure the kids were alright
As I was vilified.
They were not alright.
As my own parents
Maligned and undermined
My proven abilities,
There was nothing I could do
But watch in anguish.
Even when I was high
I was watching and waiting,
Biding my time unbidden.
Biding my time unbidden.
And when the time came
To stop waiting and do/be/have
I quit binging
And the capable one
Who had always been
Rose to the occasion
And took over.
No custody needed.
That’s when everything finally
Turned out alright
For everyone.
The queer one wasn’t the queerest
The queer one wasn’t the queerest
And the queen became a king
Unbidden but bidden.
